Just like people need a good bed for a good nights sleep so do puppies. We did some research but found a website which had what looked like the softest and most comfortable dog bed we had seen.

The First Bed

We ordered his first bed on August 20th so that we had enough time for it to arrive. It actually arrived within 48 hours which was very impressive. We chose a large bed from PupNaps and I have to say we are very impressed with it.

Choosing the large bed was probably a mistake but I was not sure how big Spike would get. I prefer to buy quality and buy once, even if it costs more than having to buy new things every other month or year etc.

Spike was quite small and the bed was massively oversized for him at the age of 8 weeks. It was so big he pooped in it which isn't something puppies usually do. He either couldn't get out of it as he was too short or he thought it was so big he could poop and didn't consider that to be too close to where he sleeps.

The cover was actually very easy to clean. Just unzip it, take out the two cushions and put it in the washing machine then let it dry after. There are two cushions inside to make its shape. The first is a round cushion at the base and the second is a long pillow like a snake that goes all the way around the side to create the raised edge.

The Second Bed

We had read a little bit more about special puppy beds to help them get used to sleeping alone. As Spike had only ever known sleeping in a big pile with his 6 brothers and sisters they can find sleeping alone a bit difficult to get used to.

Being alone is one thing they have to deal with but the loss of all the body heat they have become accustomed to can leave them feeling cold at night.

Puppies second bed with microwavable beans for heat

The new bed we found has a pack of 'beans' at the bottom that you can take out and put in the microwave to warm them up. You place it back in the bottom of the bed and it provides some warmth without burning their skin. This gives your puppy a bit of heat similar to being huddled with their siblings.

You can find this bed at Pets at Home. Ours is the small version but we should have bought the medium sized one shown in the link as he has outgrown it in just two months.

The medium sized bed would certainly have enabled him to stretch out for a bit longer but the main reason we bought it was for the heated beans.

Final Thoughts

The PupNaps bed is absolutely fantastic but for a French Bulldog the smaller one should be fine even if they want to stretch out. With the large one he will never have a problem being able to stretch and he also likes to have some toys in his bed too. The the bigger bed has space for toys and a good stretch so that's a plus.

The smaller bed with the heated beans was certainly helpful to keep him warm and replace the feeling of being with his siblings. We would have bought that one first had we known heated beds were a thing.

The heated bed is a bit of a throw away item. Spike likes to hang his head over the edge of the bed which has squashed the sides a bit but that is not much of a problem has he has outgrown it first before it was worn out.
