We took him to the vet to have an initial health check after bringing him home. French Bulldogs can have lots of problems and we wanted to make sure that there was nothing standing out as a problem from the beginning.

French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed which is due to their short noses. They have all sorts of potential breathing issues to look out for.

Bulldogs actually have the same amount of soft tissue as a long nosed dog but in a much smaller space so they can over heat quickly and of course they snore…. Whilst other breeds also snore Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are notorious for snoring.

Free Health Check

Most vets will offer a free health check for new pets. We booked this before we had even collected him so that it could be done as soon as possible.

One of the things mentioned when buying a pet is to see if you can negotiate a 48 hour period where you can return your puppy for a refund if the vet doesn’t give them a good appraisal. We were aware of this but did not do that however we did make sure we had that health check booked in.

He got the all clear

The vet said that Spike has a decent sized nose for his breed as his face is not as flat as some he has seen which is good to know. I also asked about his nails as they were getting quite long.

Spike is really quite good he just goes along with most things but it is good idea to get your puppy used to having his nails trimmed while he is young. In fact as many things you can get them used to at a young age will help as you they grow older. Nail trimming, brushing teeth, bathing, going to the groomers (if needed), all these things are best made familiar at a young age.

The vet trimmed his nails and showed me how to not cut them too short. Apparently they can actually bleed if cut too short, I will put together a post focused on trimming nails when he needs them cutting again.

One more thing

It’s Spikes 4th day with us and he has been having a bit of an upset stomach. Poops are getting quite wet and on occasion he has been scooting across the floor which is a sign of irritation.

The advice given was to feed him an egg a day to bind them a bit more. We are keeping an eye on it but it does seem really unfair on him, however this could just be stress caused by the new home and sleeping without his siblings. We will, like it or not, keep you up to date with this as it is worrying for first time owners. We mostly feel a bit sorry for him having to go through it without us being able to solve it for him.
