As we decided not to crate our puppy, we needed some other way of confining him to a safe area in our flat. The easiest way for us to do this was with a puppy playpen.

The Puppy Playpen

A puppy playpen is a small metal enclosure that allows you to confine your puppy to a certain part of your home. The playpen should be big enough for their bed, a water bowl, possibly a puppy pad and some space to play with some toys.

Not all playpens are made equally. Some cost more and some cost less. Some are higher quality and others can be found for less money. In pet stores they tend to cost more and in one case it was more than double the price. For this reason we managed to find a similar styled playpen on Amazon for just under half the price at around £30.

You can see the current price on Amazon for the Bunny Business 8 Panel Playpen which is shown in the image below.

The main reason we chose to order this style of puppy playpen was not just about the price. It actually has 8 sides of which only 6 are shown to the left.

When all the sides are out it makes a large square double the size shown but it is possible to fold back two panels to make an oblong half the total size.

We live in a flat so this was a major help due to our limited amount of space.

It comes with two clips to close the gap between the final two panels. It also has a little door to allow your pet to jump out although small puppies might not be able to make it out so check first.

We Bought a Second Playpen

We have now bought a second playpen from Amazon. It's called the Yaheetech Heavy Duty Dog Pen. This dog pen is more expensive than the first but I much prefer it for several reasons. To start, all around the edge there is a thick protection barrier hiding the thin metal bars including where the puppy door is located.

I really like how this one assembles. It has 6 panels of which one has the doggy door and there are 6 poles with a hook at the top. You simply put the poles through the hoops at the side of each panel to fix them together. You could chose to use less than all 6 panels to make a smaller space but by using all 6 it gives a decent area.

The panels are slightly wider than the 8 panel puppy playpen but this one only has 6 so it does not make a large square. The panels are the same height so around 60cm tall. Unsurprisingly this playpen was more expensive but I absolutely believe this to be a much better product of a far higher quality and so worth the extra money.

So what did I do with the other playpen?

We are lucky enough to have a small balcony with our flat but the fence has a bit of a gap at the bottom which Spike might be able to get under. For this reason we have now put the other playpen outside against the fence so it is safe for him to just walk outside. We have attached the playpen to the fence with plastic cable ties to hold it in place. When he is fully grown we will be able to fold it up and store it quite easily.

Balcony Playpen

As you can see the playpen fits up against the fence quite nicely, blocking the gap at the bottom and it's long enough to go the full length of the balcony with enough to block off the corner where we put the rest of our plants as he tries to eat them currently.
